Veterinary Orthopedic Surgery
Our hospital employs doctors and technicians who have specialized training in surgery. We are pleased to offer advanced veterinary surgical procedures that are often only performed at advanced referral practices. Our veterinarians have many years experience in performing fracture and knee repair surgeries, including bone pinning, cruciate ligament and patella repairs. We pride ourselves in getting our patients back to full function as soon as possible. The Animal Medical & Surgical Center is one of the few veterinary hospitals in Cherokee County, Georgia to offer these advanced surgical procedures.
Radiosurgery
We are proud to offer radiosurgery at the Animal Medical & Surgical Center of Canton, GA, which is similar to, but often more superior than, laser surgery. The advanced high-frequency radio energy reduces surgery time by safely cutting and coagulating tissue simultaneously, thereby minimizing blood loss and post-operative discomfort. The radiosurgery technique is especially beneficial in the removal of growths in the skin or mouth. Commonly, only a local anesthetic is necessary for radiosurgery.
Before Your Pet's Surgery
Prior to surgery, each veterinary patient undergoes a thorough physical examination and blood tests. Based on bloodwork results, age and physical condition, we then develop an anesthetic protocol specifically for your pet. Anesthesia is administered in a safe, highly-monitored environment.
During Your Pet's Surgery
Our surgeries are performed in a specialized sterile operating room used only for surgery, equipped similarly to a surgical suite in a human hospital. During surgery, we monitor your pet's blood pressure, CO2, oxygen saturation, body temperature, heart rate and ECG. Your pet's vital signs are recorded throughout the surgery and subsequent recovery period. Every patient is wrapped in warm blankets in order to maintain body temperature and is assigned a nurse for personal care. Following surgery, pet owners are called with an update on their pet's condition.
After Your Pet's Surgery
Intensive Care
The Animal Medical & Surgical Center of Canton, GA features an intensive care ward where patients can be seen and monitored at all times by our caring staff. Our nurse technicians regularly record vital signs, temperature and fluid levels for all patients - post-surgical, ill or injured - in our ICU. A Bair Hugger also is used to keep patients warm and comfortable. We are equipped to provide oxygen therapy and nebulization when needed. For our small animal and exotic pet patients, we have a specialized enclosed unit that regulates temperature and humidity to aid in recovery.
Pain Management For Your Pet
Veterinary patients feel pain and discomfort under the same circumstances as people. We know that recognizing and alleviating pain in our patients is the essence of quality care. Pain medication is administered before, during and following all surgical procedures. Pain relief medication is sent home with your pet at the time of discharge. Many times a combination of medication is used for optimum effect. Pain management can also be a quality of life issue in cases of arthritis, injury or other chronic debilitating diseases. Please ask a veterinarian or hospital staff member at the Animal Medical & Surgical Center how we can help.
